Keeping motivated during setbacks

It can be incredibly hard to keep motivated sometimes, particularly when there are lots of different
things that can stand in the way of you achieving your goals. However, managing setbacks and keeping motivated is as much a part of business as cash forecasts and product development. By learning how to keep motivation levels high, you can avoid falling into the trap of thinking that you will never get where you want to be, and the struggle of trying to keep your business alive when your vision has been distorted by setbacks.

Here are 5 steps that you can do to increase your motivation, even after a setback.

  1. Take a step back from what you are doing. Sometimes taking a little break can have a massive impact on motivation levels and can help you to notice and appreciate why you started out in the first place. There is nothing like reminding yourself of the reasons why you are doing something to invigorate your energy and motivational levels.
  2.  When you have had a setback it can be hard to see the path that you are taking clearly. Therefore, it is always a good idea to re-evaluate your goals and even to set new ones. Remember however, that when setting goals it is important to break them down into smaller segments. This way you will always be working towards a smaller goal. When working towards a smaller goal the rewarding feeling or satisfaction that you get when you complete these goals is more frequent. As you keep feeling satisfaction throughout the process you are more likely to remain motivated to follow it through to its completion and find new ways to solve setbacks.
  3. Focus on what is important. Sometimes setbacks come at the worst possible time, but if you keep focused on your expected outcome and believe that you will achieve your goal the more likely it is to happen. Primarily this is because if you believe something will happen, you are more likely to find ways to make it happen and to find ways around setbacks. Positivity may sound like a cliché, but it’s important.
  4. Allow yourself to be inspired. All too often we think that business needs to be strictly formalised and that our ideas should be locked away in a safe somewhere to protect them from theft. However, ideas are mostly developed via talking to people and being inspired from others stories and testimonies. By going out and talking to people, explaining your ideas and developing them, your passion will come through and through their encouragement your motivation will increase.

Share the load. Sharing your ideas is one thing, but sharing the work? That’s completely different. Many people try to take on too much at one time and often end up feeling burned out and unmotivated to continue. By trusting in your team and not taking on too much yourself you can help yourself to avoid a motivational meltdown and save your business.
